Unlimited texting-explain?

i have Verizon and I guess we have the family plan, we're a family of four. can someone explain how unlimited texting works. is it $5 a month. can you have unlimited texing on just one phone, because my parents don't text.does it also include unlimited minutes for people in Verizon? thank you
